Collection: Easter Island

900 statues. 1 quarry. And a history that's been rewritten since writing began.

The Moai of Rapa Nui were carved from a single volcanic crater using stone tools, by a civilization so remote it had no contact with the outside world. The largest weigh over 80 tons. Nearly 400 of them never left the quarry. The island's own oral tradition says the statues walked to their positions. The undeciphered Rongorongo script found on the island shares no relationship with any other writing system on earth. What interrupted the project, what the statues meant, and what they were built to face — nobody has ever agreed on any of it.

This is the collection for everyone who has seen a photograph of the Moai and felt, without being able to explain why, that something much larger is staring back.
